I’m excited that today, Prey Species is a stop on the blog tour for L.M. Preston’s latest book: Purgatory Reign. I’m delighted to highlight the work of an author who is not only an accomplished YA science fiction writer, but a proud and loving wife who gives her husband a great deal of credit for being both inspiration and encouragement behind her books. She is also Mom to four children and active in helping develop young writers through workshops and speaking engagements.
Preston’s most recent novel, Purgatory Reign, details the journey of a very special young man, Peter Saints. Peter, left orphaned in the care of a devoted if intense pastor must overcome great personal obstacles and historical crisis to fight evil forces set on destruction. Peter is not alone on this adventure and is joined by Angel, a small but expertly skilled fighter encased in baggy sweats and Kyle, a self-proclaimed street kid. As the trio travel together to outrun the dangerous secrets of the past, each discovers they have lots in common including being hunted by evil.
Purgatory Reign is a quick paced adventure that will keep you turning pages. There’s no time for extra over the top detail in this novel! The characters are likeable and unlike many science fiction novels, their stories can stand alone even without the science fiction component. The book is never dull or without a sense of continued suspense.
Preston does leave a lot of the details regarding the evil organization hunting Peter and his friends to the end of the book. A lot of specifics concerning why Peter and his two friends are under attack and what must be accomplished in order for them to survive are explained in a whirlwind within a couple of chapters. Most of what classifies this book as a science fiction novel happens in the last two thirds of the book, but the foreshadowing does offer dramatic flavoring to the novel.
Reasons to Read: Preston does an amazing job with quickly entangling the reader with the lives of the young characters in her book. There is a little romance, a lot of suspense, and even a touch or two of adolescent appropriate humor. The book ends with the hint of a sequel and I look forward to the future adventures that await Peter and his friends!
Reasons to Pass: The story lines building the characters and the accounts of their travels at times seem separate from the remainder of the overall plot where good and evil battle. The story can be challenging to follow at times simply because so many details regarding the background of the story are kept till the end. There are also some grammatical errors found throughout the text that for the most part are minor, but may at times distract the reader.
Category: YA Science Fiction
Suggested Rating: PG-13 This book does contain strong language, sexual innuendo, and topics unsuitable for immature children and teenagers. This novel also contains graphic and detailed accounts of characters of religious influence and magic, which may make some uncomfortable.
